Congratulations to Sergei Bobrovsky.  Had to watch the last nine minutes to see him lock it down, and the better team finally won.  Too bad they didn’t finish it in four.

Oilers should have been out in the 2nd round

Crazy the Flyers got rid of him several years ago for Bryzgalov who absolutely sucked

Suggests that Hurts and his receivers are better at the long ball than Burrows and his.

.  How does it suggest that?

2022 - 12 TD passes for Burrow came from outside the RZ, compared to 13 TD passes for Hurts.

2023 - Given the limited number of games played by Burrow, its a harder comparison to make... but if we go by TD per game played, we can compare somewhat fairly.  4 TD in 10 games for Burrow (0.40 TD per game).   Hurts had 10 in 17 games, 0.588 TD per game.    That's not quite a 50% increase for Hurts... but its tough to say anything definitively.

Very small sample size, so its not definitive of anything.   But, looking at the AY/A...
(Only using seasons where Hurts was the primary starter)

Hurts: 7.1, 8.4, and 6.8 - career average 7.3.
Burrow: 6.7, 9.0, 7.6, and 6.4 - career average 7.6.

and then there's the 'Adjusted Net Yards' crazy formula...
Hurts career: 6.45.
Burrow career: 6.52.

And passes for First Downs (per game average).

Hurts: 143 (9.5), 165 (11), 185(10.8).   =
Burrow: 150 (15), 202 (12.6), 222 (13.9), 115 (11.5).

Hard to definitively say that the Bengals' offense is less effective at the long ball than the Eagles' offense.  They are very different philosophically.  One relies much more on the running game than the other.

It's hard to use counting stats in the red-zone since it's very situational and it's a smaller sample size.

In 2022, Mahomes 20 more passes inside the the 10 than the 2nd most (Kirk Cousins). Most teams run when they get inside the 10, since it's one of the few areas of the field where running is more efficient than passing.

That was that idiot Laviolette.  Bobrovsky played 48 games in the 2010/11 season and started the playoffs.  The Flyers lost Game 1 to BUF 1-0 when Ryan Miller shut them out.  They were tied after the first period of Game 2 and Laviolette pulled Bob to put Boucher in net.  Boucher had a really good playoff run for the Flyers in 2000; unfortunately this was 2011.  By the end of that series Boucher was giving up goals from behind the net.  Somehow the Flyers got past BUF in 7 games with bad goaltending.  Laviolette saw fit to keep watching bad goaltending from Boucher, and even started that sieve Michael Leighton for a game (even though he cost the Flyers a chance to win the Cup in 2010).  Laviolette didn't start Bobrovsky in another game until Game 4 against BOS -- when the Flyers were already down 3 games to 0 and the team had quit.

Ed Snider was livid at the goaltending carousel after they were eliminated and mandated Holmgren to go get a top-tier goaltender.  Unfortunately, there was nothing available in free agency that summer resembling a franchise goaltender.  Holmgren threw money at the best available candidate, being Bryz -- and unfortunately blew up the team in the process of doing so.  Traded both Mike Richards and Jeff Carter away to clear up cap space for Bryz.  Surprise, surprise -- Richards and Carter both won Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014 in Los Angeles, while the Flyers haven't contended since.

Holmgren should have pushed back on Snider because it was obvious even then that Bob had really good potential.  Laviolette was just an idiot.

Eagles OT Lane Johnson: 'We have to go prove things and are eager to do so'

After their once-promising season spiraled into a lethargic wild-card exit, the Eagles were left to pick up the pieces this offseason.

Many months into the wait to write a new narrative, longtime Philadelphia offensive tackle Lane Johnson is pleased with what the team has done to improve and excited for what a face-lifted roster can accomplish, Bobby Kownack of NFLcom reports.

"We have a lot of new faces, a lot of turnover," Johnson said Monday on The Insiders. "But [I] felt comfortable with the way we drafted. Got some great players. And really when you look at our roster, we have a lot of size. Obviously we have to go prove things and are eager to do so. But when you just look at the guys walking around the building, we've got size, we've got speed, and guys willing to work."

The then-defending NFC champions raced out to a 10-1 start last season despite failing to play a complete game. Instead of building off the momentum to come together down the stretch, though, Philly shortly fell apart. The team lost six of its final seven contests, including a 32-9 defeat to the Buccaneers on Super Wild Card Weekend.

Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio are both trusted minds capable of breathing new air into the building. On defense, Philadelphia signed vets like linebacker Devin White and reunited with difference makers such as C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who tied for the league lead with six interceptions as an Eagle back in 2022. The draft also provided two more highly touted cornerbacks, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, to help rectify a 30th-ranked scoring unit.

On offense, the much ballyhooed signing of Saquon Barkley remains the highlight.

Given his position anchoring the offensive line, Johnson's especially pumped for what might come from a move like that.

"Once you see him, you'll never forget, just physically imposing guy," Johnson said of Barkley. "I think he walks around 230 (pounds). ... He's ultra competitive. When you see what he can do at the running back position and we can flex him out at receiver, he can go. It's unbelievable. I never thought that he would be playing for us, but here it is. I know that he's excited. We're definitely excited up front. I think he's poised for a big, big year."

Richards and Carter were traded in large part b/c of off ice activities, it was pretty notorious at the time, Carter got his act together but Richards career tanked after a few years as injuries piled up - how much was caused by "training habits" is unknown.

The big mistake was after Pronger's injury not to use the Carter/Richards trade as the basis for a total rebuild, instead they muddled through for a decade, and Holmgren was the primary culprit (both his moves and his mandate to Fletcher to win now when he hired him). Hextall had the green light to rebuild from Snider in 2014, two years after the window was open, traded Coburn and Kimmo at the TDL, then basically sat on his hands, took Patrick and then traded Schenn three years later - so again, no commitment to a rebuild, got fooled by Mason having a couple good years into thinking they were competitive.

Torts has saved this franchise by being adamant that this team wasn't close to competitive when Fletcher couldn't make up his mind (trade Giroux, then trade for TDA and extend Risto), forcing change. Briere and Jones are on the same page with him, even with Michkov coming over, you don't hear anyone in the organization claim "mission accomplished." Briere has been clear they need to continue to add young assets.

You don't have to completely tank to rebuild, you do have to commit to 3-5 years of building up a stockpile of assets (as Florida has shown, not just to draft players but to facilitate trades for key players). Flyers do have good scouts, they've landed Bump and Sotheran in the 5th rd in back to back years, both have played well above their draft slots, Barkey in the 3rd, etc. they're great at finding/developing goalies (look at Bob, Stolarz, Lyon). That's key for building depth around your core players.

Panthers aren't the best example towards your overall point.  Their nucleus was built from the tank:

Aaron Ekblad -- 1st overall pick

Sam Reinhart -- 2nd overall pick

Alex Barkov -- 2nd overall pick

Matthew Tkachuk -- 6th overall pick (acquired using Huberdeau, who was a 3rd overall pick)

Sam Bennett -- 4th overall pick

This is a fun conversation to have. Well, maybe not fun, but it's worth thinking about.

I know there's more depth to the trade but what happens if the Flyers have Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and Sergio Bobrovsky instead of Wayne Simmonds, Jake Voracek and Bryz in goal? There was so much more that this trade lead do, Brayden Schenn being a part of it but the face of the trade was 2 forwards and a goalie.

Those 2010 timeframe Flyers teams were my favorite outside of 1997. The Richards/Carter teams were just as much fun to watch as the Simmer/Voracek teams.

Richards and Carter for Simmonds, Schenn and Couturier was a W for the Flyers.

Bryz for Bobrovsky was the issue.

Mike Richards for Schenn and Simmonds was a slight W.  Jeff Carter for Couturier and Voracek was a huge, lopsided W.

Carter was a marshmallow of a player.  I felt good for Richards when he won the Cup, felt good for Recchi when he won, felt great for Brind'Amour when he won, felt good for Braydon Coburn when he won a Cup in Tampa, felt good for Timonen in CHI.  Obviously felt good for Bob last night.

Never felt good for Carter; just never much liked him as a Flyer.

We all know the Eagles entire red zone offense is built around either using the tush push or getting into a tush push situation.  Whether that is due to the overwhelming efficacy of the tush push, bad coaching/playcalling, or Hurts struggling to pass in those tight windows…we can all debate until the end of time.

But Hurts having a relatively low percentage of his TD throws being in the red zone…it’s plainly obvious that it’s because of the tush push offense.  There is no other reason to debate it.
